2B/1.5B (2 Doubles/1 King) This Historic Home on the water and in the settlement was built in 1854. Sanctuary is a home that has been in the Malone family for over 140 years. The home is located on the water at the entrance to Hope Town Harbor, standing watch over all the various vessels and visitors to the settlement. The home is currently under the stewardship of Vernon (8th Generation Descendent of Wyannie Malone) and Bobbi Malone’s son and wife, Brian (9th Generation) and Kat Malone—who welcome you to share their home and their heritage.
Enjoy a bit of what makes Hope Town a truly magical location in the two story beach front cottage. Morning views of the ferry coming into the harbor from the upstairs bedroom as you rest under Abaco Pine rafters placed by the early shipwright carpenters of Hope Town in the late 1800s. Take a moment to pen a letter, read a book, or just enjoy a view of the lighthouse as you sit at the alcoved office area at the Schoolmaster’s desk (c1800) from the Hope Town School. Lazily approach your day as you wander downstairs—noticing the adze work on the interior walls—where the hands of Hope Town citizens from more than a hundred years ago manipulated the lumber for strength and for function. Brew some coffee and have a slice of Bahamian Bread with butter as you plan out your day—noting the Pie Safe (c1880s) saved from the Methodist Mission house.
Take a moment to walk to the water’s edge—paying attention to the tide—as high tide is the best for an afternoon or evening swim and plan out your day. The water is calm enough to teach the little ones—or newbies—how to snorkel or to have a refreshing cocktail at the end of a long day. If the beach is in your schedule, grab some refreshments and take a left out of the lane. If a trip to town is in your future, then take a right and follow the roads through the historic village. No matter what your plans are for your time in Hope Town, Sanctuary is located centrally.
Sanctuary is truly a home—Brian and Kat return throughout the year to reconnect with family and friends (and to lovingly restore and maintain the home), and they look forward to sharing their home with others who seek to experience the Hope Town that has existed for centuries. The home is perfect for two couples or a family with a couple of children.

Home away from home
Posted on: 3/4/2019

This was our third year staying in homes managed by Hope Town Hideaways. The entire team offers only the finest hospitality and customer service. Every detail a visitor might need is attended to. From meeting us and our bags upon arrival and taking us to the property – to picking us up and taking us to the ferry when returning to our home in the States. The caretakers, Hilary & Shawn Thompson & Mike Jones are simply superb. We now think of Hope Town as our home away from home. February 2019

Very Comfortable Cozy Cottage and Best Customer Service

We have stayed at the Sanctuary House the past two years. This wonderful 19th century cottage sits right at the mouth of beautiful Hope Town Harbour. The view from the house and patio of the Elbow Reef Lighthouse, the Sea of Abaco, and on to the Atlantic Ocean is truly stunning. The Atlantic is a couple of hundred yards behind the house and the surf can be heard most of the time. It is a short walk to anything one wishes to do in the Settlement or on the ocean beach.

Hope Town Hideaways is possibly the easiest group to do business with we have come across. Samara & Chris Albury, plus the rest of the staff, do everything in their power to make the experience one of comfort and ease of transition to the island life style.

We cannot recommend Sanctuary House and Hope Town Hideaways highly enough.

Quirky cottage with stunning views
Posted on: 8/5/2014

Sanctuary is in a wonderful location with stunning views of the sea and the lighthouse. It was in a peaceful spot with its own little beach, where we had breakfast every morning! This house, once owned by Burl Ives is very quirky and has a large bedroom upstairs with super views. We loved it here and would definitely stay here again.

Thanks for taking the time to leave a review. We are delighted that you enjoyed Sanctuary. Hope to see you again very soon

Enjoyed staying here. Wonderful patio right on the water and could walk into the sea, especially fun at low tide.

Loved the Location!

Sanctuary Cottage, very historic, lots of character, rooms nicely decorated and well equipped with all that you need for your vacation. Nice patio area with tables & chairs & lounges that faces the entrance to Harbour, so you can see all the boats coming & going. View of famous red & white candy cane lighthouse. Great spot for sunsets. Very quiet area down Hurricane Lane- path to house. Easy walking distance to all places needed in town. Locals & tourists around town and in restaurants & shops very friendly. Restaurants we ate at: Cap'n Jacks on the water, always a fun time. Harbour's Edge, Abaco Inn, very nice and good meals (we always tried the fish & seafood specials and of course all the tasty rum drinks :) We also rented bikes and toured the entire island one day, also had a rental boat to go out touring & sightseeing, many beautiful places to visit. Would recommend this rental home to family & friends. We really loved our Bahamas vacation!

Great spot for families
Posted on: 1/5/2014
We were really pleased with the location at the mouth of the harbor. The kids did lots of exploring on the sandbar as the tide went in and out. It was like having a marine playground in the front yard, plus we got to see all the boats coming and going through the channel. I also enjoyed the feeling of staying in the home of a local family. There was plenty of room for a family of four, and we had everything we needed for a week-long stay, including easy access to Vernon's Store and Munchies. Many thanks to the Hope Town Hideaways staff for the excellent service.

Great place!
