The herd has dwindled to only seven remaining Abaco Barbs (wild horses) in the world, on the island of Abaco. These Wild Horses have been genetically connected to the Spanish Barb and probably established the herd with Spanish Galleon wrecks. Other theories are the wrecks during the Civil War as Nassau was used as a shipping port especially during blockades. Several ship wrecks in the area would have included horses used for the troops. Chris Thompson dove on one such wreck with his Uncle Roscoe Thompson. The sandy bottom was littered with skeletons of horses. The horses are somewhat protected but not thriving at the moment. The dedicated organization Wild Horses of Abaco has been monitoring the numbers and health of the herd. They are beautiful animals and may not be around forever so why not take a tour and enjoy a little piece of Abaco history.
