Description

The Pelican Cays are three separate islands just south of Tilloo Cay and Elbow Cay. The first island has a high elevation on the south side and remnants of a US satellite tracking system. The beach is soft sand with no shade but great for swimming, snorkeling and exploring (bring some sort of shoes if you decide to go on the ocean side or up to the highest point). Past the beach is an area to explore with casuarinas, coconut trees, curly tail lizards, hermit (soldier to Bahamians) crabs and great sandy white beach. Be sure to anchor correctly and remind everyone it is a protected national park so only take photos and leave foot prints. The middle Pelican Cay has just a small beach and again the honeycomb or moon rock but the most southern Pelican Cay is a great picnic stop. The cay is slightly elevated and offers deep drop off into gin-clear water. It is serious post card material and you will feel as though you are in the middle of no where as there is ocean surf pounding behind you and water, water everywhere. Again, carefully anchor and keep an eye on your boat, we often trim the motors and drop everyone off and any accessories (footballs, towels, cameras, etc.) then let the captain motor out a little distance from the surge and swim back – doing this in reverse on the way out.
