Blue Holes – they are everywhere in Abaco. They are fun to snorkel but beware of diving as dangerous, disorienting caves -- take note of the memorial located in the blue hole in the mangrove creek area. Blue Holes are cavernous limestone openings sometimes in the middle of an island but often in the water. National Geographic invited a group of scientists to study the mysterious blue holes and created an award-winning documentary called: Extreme Cave Diving, shown on PBS. Blue holes in Abaco are still being discovered and the latest count is 100. The water is usually fresh on top leading to salt on bottom. Due to the lack of oxygen in some of the landlocked blue holes, the water preserves anything that falls inside. Intrigued scientists have found carbon-dating very accurate discovering skeletons of giant tortoises more than 2,500 years old! Everything is preserved include leaves, fruits and more bones like saltwater crocodiles and native indians. They have been called "liquid time capsules." My children just call it a great place to swing on a rope! Snorkeling should be safe but diving is not for the inexperienced. BUT if you must, experienced scuba guides like Timmy Higgs can customize a trip for you. Just ask the Hope Town Hideaways rental home office to set up your custom dive trip and see what you can discover.
